Nobody likes weeds. They mess up our yards, gardens, and landscaping. They are unsightly and oddly resilient in harsh conditions .They can grow thru concrete. We do constant battle with the weeds. And yet, Jesus taught a parable weeds in a wheat field and said we should not pull them up. Why would he say that? And what does it mean to us?

“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat. When the wheat sprouted, then the weeds also appeared.”

Matthew 13:24-26

Hale Center was a town rich in summer jobs. I had my pick of farmers looking for cheap laborers to hoe their fields. Chopping weeds was harder than I thought. The weeds had to be cut without hurting the plants. It required a close eye and a careful aim. Weeds grow faster, take more water, and absorb more nutrients. They damage crops by reducing its yield.

If the Word is good seed that grows and bears fruit, then what affect does a weed have on our spiritual lives? Are there weeds that hinder us from being more fruitful?

• Is there anything in your life that might be considered a weed?

―stumbling blocks, evil desires, cravings, bad habits―

• What steps could you take to remove those weeds?

Oh Lord, sometimes I am a flourishing tree in your presence and other times I am a desolate field of weeds. Help!
