Developing a healthy prayer life isn’t always an easy thing to do. There are hindrances to praying, different needs, and different ways of praying. Jesus had some unusual habits in his prayer life. This lesson will get you started.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”

Mark 1:35

A mentor once challenged me to set a time for daily prayer. He said I needed to find a quiet place and pray for 30 minutes. The time was easy to set, the place was easy to find, and wanting to be a man of prayer was easily imagined. Everything was good except for the praying. It was painfully hard. The first time I prayed, I did well until I glanced at my watch. I still had 26 minutes to go.

What sometimes happens when we pray? We get distracted, nod off, daydream, run out of things to say?

• Jesus made it a habit to get up and pray before the crowds found him. He faced a torrential schedule of people and places and, he clearly depended on prayer.

• If Jesus needed daily prayer, does it make sense that we need it too? Many believers say prayer is important but struggle to have a consistent prayer life. On a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the strong-est, rate your prayer life:

1 2 3 4 5

• If you need a closer walk with Jesus, then a good place to begin is with your prayer life. And a good starting point is to get honest. How did you rate yourself? Sprouting requires personal prayer.

Lord, I know that prayer isn’t a formula or an algorithm. There isn’t an equation of how much and how long or how often. It’s about a heart of connection, and I need more.
